Residential Programs are Successful.

The rate of obesity in America continues to grow exponentially and, with its growth, the need for better treatment options becomes critical. Residential weight-loss programs are nothing new. In fact, many well-known facilities have successfully helped thousands of individuals restart their lives. The clinical evidence demonstrating the success of residential programs is growing as well and continues to support the need for more programs of this type.

Residential Programs Make Sense.

Residential programs make sense: You remove an individual who is struggling with their weight from the hyper-competitive and fast-paced world in which they live and put them in a controlled environment in which they can focus their energies on making the changes necessary to jump-start their lives and engage themselves totally without outside distractions. If done for several weeks, demonstrable results can be seen.

The Institute of Lifestyle and Weight Management’s Residential Program offers all of the support and expertise that other programs offer and more.

The Institute of Lifestyle and Weight Management’s Residential Program is similar to many of the other successful programs, consisting of a residential center specializing in understanding and teaching the psychology, behavior, nutrition, and fitness aspects of successful weight loss and related lifestyle change and including the following:

  • A residential setting that allows each client to be “immersed” for a sufficient amount of time.
  • The program, like our other non-residential programs, incorporates our Seven Essential Elements™ through comprehensive evaluations, team-based consultations and support, structured learning and fitness environments plus a customized level of medical care.
  • All care is provided on site, which includes a medical clinic, classrooms, a complete fitness center, locker rooms, reception area and a dining area.

How is ILWM Residential Different?

ILWM Residential is the only residential weight loss program that transforms its participants’ lives through a proprietary four-phase model that specifically focuses on ensuring success once the participant has completed the residential phase.

This unique four-phase model is a “Processing Framework” because each participant is uniquely moved from a logical starting point A (undesirable) to a logical endpoint Z (desirable) through a simple four-step process of engaging, modifying, transitioning, and integrating. This framework shepherds participants through the behavior modification process.

  • Phase I: The Engagement Phase
  • Phase II: The Modification Phase
  • Phase III: The Transition Planning Phase
  • Phase IV: The Integration Phase

Engagement Phase

During the engagement phase, participants are immersed into the program, effectively cutting them off from the undesirable influences and behaviors. Participants are sequestered on site within the program, interacting with the ILWM staff and fellow participants. It is during this phase that the evaluation and education process begins. ILWM’s medical staff will conduct medical evaluations to determine the participant’s state of health, identify any contributing medical factors or conditions, and to screen for co-morbidities. Participants meet with the medical staff routinely for the first two weeks, to address any medical conditions. The education process begins at this point as well—group classes and counseling sessions begin immediately and continue throughout the four-week duration. Lectures are designed to provide a complete understanding of the participants’ current situation and of where they will be going.

Modification Phase

Once the educational process is under way, participants begin to put into practice what they are learning. It is by this process of implementing the program that the behavior modification phase begins. Participants begin eating healthily in the dining area, exercising vigorously in exercise classes and workshops, attending group counseling sessions, and generally living a more healthy existence, all with the positive behaviors being reinforced by repetition and with the support of the staff. Personal training sessions (which are included) help you to uncover your true potential while what you learn in the classroom reinforces what you are experiencing in the gym. This behavior modification program helps you to internalize the new healthy behavior. This phase continues until you are ready to exit the residential program after four weeks.

Transition Phase

The transition phase begins with about a week to go in the program (Note: Modification Phase is still occurring). Participants work with ILWM counselors to adapt the new learned behaviors to life outside the clinic. The move from the regimented and ideal environment of the residential program to the often hectic and unstructured world of everyday life is a critical one for long-term success. This is where ILWM differs from all other residential weight loss centers. Most residential programs are successful when it comes to engaging their clientele and helping them make modifications in their life. However, once they are on their own, old habits creep back and it becomes evident that true lifestyle change did not occur. This is why most of the residential programs offer programs for return visitors. There is a good chance you will put back on a significant amount of the weight you lost and then you will return for a tune-up. ILWM aims to have participants be successful the first time through; it is because of this that we see this stage as the most critical of the process. The transition will be personalized to your living situation to make the transition as seamless as possible. Special classes and counseling sessions will help to ease the transition and maximize participants’ chance of success.

An integral part of the Transition phase is ILWM’s Personal Health Integration Plan (PHIP):

Each participant receives a Personal Health Integration Planner (PHIP) which puts all of their test result and strategic health recommendations at their fingertips. It serves as a road map for their health on a very granular level and details how the member should integrate new pro-health habits into their lifestyle. Included in the PHIP are:

  • Health screening examination results
  • Personal health and professional goals
  • Detailed information on the individual's medical history (personal and family)
  • Lifestyle habits and job demands overview
  • Exercise Plan
  • Nutrition Plan
  • Self-Care guides
    • Mind-body (e.g., breathing techniques, muscle relaxation, guided imagery, meditation)
    • Personal Growth & Spirituality
    • Physical Environment Strategies and Tactics
  • Pharmaceutical and supplement regimen review and plan
  • Preventive medicine plan
  • Alternative treatment plan (e.g., massage, acupuncture)
  • Genetic reports and counseling
  • Health Advocate reports and counseling

Integration Phase

During the integration phase we will reach out to each participant’s hometown physician(s) and healthcare professionals and assist in developing a support network to ensure long-term accountability and success. If needed, we will help participants select a primary care provider and our referrals will be based on excellent patient results together with our ability to openly share information and integrate our services across the entities in the care cycle.

Our integration phases consists of myriad types of activities which, grouped together, constitute what can be defined as long-term lifestyle modification. Each activity and process is examined at a very granular and detailed level but is always done with an eye towards of the long-term lifestyle modification. Remote monitoring, Internet consultations, measuring, informing, educating, and coaching the patient are all a part of the transition and integration phases.

Additionally, if you are local to the Raleigh area, a rollover into ILWM’s Change for Good program can continue the progress began in the residential program. We started as a non-residential center (we continue to operate a successful “outpatient” program) and then developed a residential offering, not the other way around—this is an important fact. We have distilled some key insights from our outpatient members that are highly applicable for those exiting a residential program.

Types of services offered under the integration phase:

Outreach Offering

  • Collaboration with your hometown primary care provider to ensure that all relevant health information is shared
  • Help locate a primary care physician for those without one
  • Help locate a fitness center and/or personal trainers in participant’s hometown that best meets their needs
  • Help connect participant to allied health professionals (e.g., psychologists, dietitians)
  • Help connect participant with community-based programs

Genetic Makeup Report

  • ILWM in partnership with a national genetic testing company will provide each participant with a comprehensive genetic report which will detail any potential pre-dispositions. This report will serve as a motivational tool and help prepare participants for potential future clinical considerations.

Telephone-based Life Coaching

  • Remote sessions with ILWM Coaching staff continue the process begun in the residential program.

Transition and Integration Seminars

  • Successful Outpatient Testimonials and Best Practices
  • Integration Planning Sessions
  • Integrating a Healthy Lifestyle into a Hectic Business Life
  • Mindfulness Living
  • Food Addictions and Treatment Options

Integration—Learning—Networking for a Cure

  • ILWM’s unique integrated clinical model (i.e., a working model that incorporated a team of healthcare providers working together in a focused setting while focusing on one condition) has always differentiated ILWM from the other medically-based practices providing supervised weight loss. Managing the success of individuals in the outpatient setting is much more difficult than in the residential setting. The ability to control their environment does not exist and there are no guarantees that an individual will participate fully in the program in which they enrolled. However, we have had the unique ability to personally touch our members and have seen some demonstrable results from doing so.
  • Our solution initially aimed to alleviate the pain for our customers by taking a bunch of fragmented services and integrating them into a service offering that would provide the most value.
  • After several years of operations, our key differentiator has changed—rather, it has evolved.
  • Our integrated model is a smart model. Because we are connected together and cover all aspects of obesity, we have been able to address all aspects of the disease. However, we not only have been able to treat this disease, but we have been able to ascertain the optimal treatment protocols.
  • Our integrated model and the systems we implemented (e.g., Electronic Medical Record) have allowed us to create a smart database with which we have developed best practices and key learnings that are applicable to our members.
  • This has allowed us to create innovative offerings like our “Eating on the Go Menu” and develop a Health Benefits Advocate for Employers.
  • The key now is moving from a model with a learning system to larger network of ideas.
  • In this expansive network of ideas is where the universal treatment regimen for obesity lies.

With ILWM, you will still be connected to the rest of the world. Our outpatient programs are integrated with our inpatient programs. Key learnings from our outpatient programs make for the most seamless transition when you return home. Therefore it is critical to interact with those who are outpatient members—they will only serve to help you succeed in the long run.
