America's New Health Imperative

What is America's #1 health concern? Surprisingly, it is unhealthy behaviors: overweight and obesity and its related conditions, poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and smoking. These health risks are the causes of or are significant contributing factors to almost all chronic diseases and conditions. Combined, these four preventable health factors account for approximately 50 – 70% of healthcare costs in America. The bottom line is that behavior is the largest single modifiable determinant of health in the United States.

What then is the cure? Eat better, participate in regular physical activity, and quit smoking, and your odds of getting a chronic disease will decrease significantly. Maintain these healthy changes for the rest of your life and you will likely live a long and healthy life. This sounds easy; however, if accomplishing that were easy, then we'd all be healthy.
